Stair Flooring in Houston
Your stairs take more foot traffic per square foot than any room in your home. We replace worn carpet, loose treads and tired nosing with stair flooring that matches your floors, feels solid underfoot and is ready before the busy season of guests arrives.

Stairs Need Their Own Plan
A staircase is not a small floor. Every step has a tread, a riser and a front edge that takes a beating, and no two steps are ever quite the same size. That is why we measure each one on its own and choose nosing made for the material you pick, instead of forcing a flat floor product over an edge.
Most people call us for one of two reasons. Either the stairs are worn out, or new floors went in downstairs and the old carpet on the steps now looks out of place. We can cover stairs in hardwood, luxury vinyl plank, laminate or carpet, and we help you match the color and height of the landing so the transition looks planned.
We also think about timing. Wood products need to sit in your home and adjust to the humidity before they go down, and a muggy Houston summer changes how long that takes. Planning a few weeks ahead means your stairs are finished before holiday visitors start climbing them.
What Your Stair Project Includes
- Step-by-step measuring
- We measure every tread and riser separately. Older staircases often vary by a fraction of an inch from step to step, and cutting to each one keeps gaps from showing.
- Removal of the old covering
- The worn carpet comes off along with its padding, the tack strips along each step and every staple left behind. We sweep the steps clear so the wood below is clean and flat.
- Checking the structure
- With the steps bare, we look for loose or squeaking treads and secure them. Covering a squeak with new flooring only hides it for a while.
- Treads, risers and matched nosing
- Hard surfaces get stair nose pieces made for that product, set in adhesive and fastened so the front edge stays put under daily traffic. Carpet is wrapped tightly over new pad with a firm edge at each step.
- Landings and transitions
- We tie the stairs into the upstairs hall and the floor at the bottom so heights line up and nothing catches a toe.
- Cleanup at the end
- Offcuts, old materials and dust are cleared before we leave, so you can use the stairs that evening.
Signs Your Stairs Are Ready for New Flooring
Carpet worn bare at the edges
The front edge of each step wears first. When you can see backing or the pad shows through, the carpet is past saving.
Squeaks and soft spots
A tread that creaks or flexes usually has a loose fastener underneath. It is worth fixing when the covering comes off anyway.
Slippery or chipped nosing
Cracked or loose stair nose pieces are a trip risk, especially for kids, older relatives and anyone carrying laundry.
New floors downstairs that don't match
If you just put in hardwood or vinyl plank on the main level, old carpet on the stairs can make the whole space feel unfinished.
Stains and pet wear
Stairs collect tracked-in dirt and pet hair fast. A hard surface or fresh carpet can make them much easier to keep clean.
How Your Stair Job Runs
- 1
A phone conversation first
Describe your staircase to us: roughly how many steps, the covering you live with today and the look you would like instead. We talk through materials and a timeline that fits your plans for the coming months.
- 2
In-home measuring and material choice
We measure each step, look at the stringers and edges, and check how the stairs meet the floors above and below. You choose the material and nosing style with samples in your own light.
- 3
Acclimation and scheduling
Wood and some laminate products sit in your home for a few days before install. We schedule around that so the boards are settled and stable when they go down.
- 4
Install day
We remove the old covering, secure any loose steps and work from the top down or bottom up depending on the layout. Most staircases are done in a day or two, and we keep a clear path when the stairs are your only way up.

What Moves the Cost of Stair Flooring
Every step gets cut and fitted by hand, so stair work is priced by the step rather than by overall floor area. Your price depends on the staircase itself and the material you choose. Before anything is torn up, we explain what is driving your quote, so you know exactly what you are paying for.
- Number of steps and landings
- More steps mean more cutting and more nosing pieces. A landing adds square footage and another set of transitions.
- Shape of the staircase
- Straight runs are simplest. Open sides, winders at a turn and curved steps take more careful cutting and finish pieces.
- Material and nosing type
- Solid hardwood treads, vinyl plank with matching stair nose, laminate and carpet all carry different material and labor costs.
- What is under the old covering
- Many stairs under carpet are rough construction-grade wood. If the surface needs leveling or extra fastening, that is part of the job.
- Timing
- Booking ahead of the fall and holiday rush gives you more flexibility on dates and time for materials to acclimate.
Stair Flooring Questions
Something not covered here? (346) 746-6967
Can you match my stairs to the new floor downstairs?
Yes, in most cases. Many hardwood, vinyl plank and laminate lines offer matching stair nose pieces, and we can source treads in a close color. We bring samples so you can see them next to your existing floor.
Is luxury vinyl plank safe on stairs?
It is when it is installed with proper stair nose pieces glued and fastened at each edge. The problem people see online is plank wrapped over an edge without the right trim. We do not install it that way.
Will we be able to use the stairs during the work?
Usually, with care. We let you know which steps are being worked on and when adhesive needs time to set. If the stairs are your only route to bedrooms, we plan the day around that.
Should I choose carpet or a hard surface for my stairs?
Carpet is quieter and softer underfoot, which many families with small children like. Hard surfaces are easier to clean and hold up well to pets. We can talk through how your household uses the stairs and help you weigh it.
How far ahead should I schedule?
A few weeks is comfortable, especially for wood that needs time to acclimate. If you want the stairs done before holiday guests or a family event, call us in late summer or early fall.
